Ancient Masks of Siberian Peoples £250.00

Aurora Art Publishers, Leningrad 1975. Compiled and introduced by S Ivanov, photographs by V Stukalov. A set of 47 loose-leaf colour plates, showing a total of 50 masks. 'The first publication of a series of festive, ceremonial and cult masks (including those used in the shamanistic and Lamaistic rituals) of the peoples inhabiting Siberia and the Russian Far East. The use of masks among these peoples goes back to remote antiquity, and the specimens published here, though made in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, are designed in accordance with age-old traditions'. The masks featured come from the collections of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Museum of Ethnography of the Peoples of the USSR, the Hermitage, and the Museum for the History of Religion and Atheism. Each plate measures 25 by 32 cms, and has a caption on the back in English and Russian. All of the plates are in fine condition. They are accompanied by a large-format, 32-page booklet giving the history and background of the masks and the groups of people who made them, illustrated with two pages of sketches of engravings. Internally fine, the booklet has some light marking to the cover. All these are contained in their original, illustrated card folder which has tears to the corners and edges and has been repaired with tape. Parallel text in Russian and English throughout.
