Johnston's Illustrations of Natural Philosophy £250.00

... Measures and Weights of the Metric System with English Equivalents: Fold-out Chart'. Charles H. Dowling, Edinburgh. Produced by the International Decimal Association (which was formed in the wake of the Great Exhibition) and published by W. and A. K. Johnston of Edinburgh, 'Geographers and engravers to the Queen'. The Great Exhibition of 1851 proved to be the catalyst for the birth of the public argument for decimalisation in Britain. At the close of the exhibition the Society of Arts gave a presentation in support of a decimal system in order to bring into line all the weights and measures currently used by various European countries. The International Association and its British branch were formed in 1855. The chart measures 48 inches by 60 inches when opened out (13 inches by 11 inches when folded) and gives illustrations of length, surface, capacity, weight, notation etc. Printed on robust, linen-backed paper with board covers. There are 24 panels, in full colour, fragile at the joints where the chart has been folded; one row of panels has come away from the rest of the chart. It will need to be strengthened to preserve it. The covers are detached but present; the front cover has an (etched?) illustration of scenes from different parts of the world. Has the stamp of the Royal Statistical Society, London. The date is approximately 1888.
