Schedule for Ethnographical Survey of the United Kingdom £50.00

British Association for the Advancement of Science, London. 'Forms of Schedule prepared by a Committee of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, appointed to Organise an Ethnographical Survey of the United Kingdom'. Bound in dark green cloth boards, in fine condition, with bright gilt titles on the spine. Internally near fine. 18 pages. No date, but has to be 1890s. Notable members of the Committee were Francis Galton and Augustus Pitt-Rivers. This schedule outlines in great detail the studies of villages to be undertaken by the Ethnographical Survey, including: 'physical types of the inhabitants; current traditions and beliefs; peculiarities of dialect; monuments and other remains of ancient culture; historical evidence as to continuity of race'. Measurements of the inhabitants should include 'height sitting, height standing, height of cranium, face length and breadth' etc. and facial details were also to be recorded: 'profile of nose (compare with sketches provided)'; 'ears (flat, outstanding, coarse or finely moulded)', 'lobes of ears (absent, present, attached, detached)' etc.
